In Short: A bass-head’s dream. You will have a hard time finding headphones that can match the quantity/quality combination of the Pro700MK2’s bass.

Quick overview:

The Pro700 MK2 is the king of bass-head headphones in the mid-range market. Few headphones can even come close to the Pro700’s bass impact, and the ones that do usually sound muddy and muffled in comparison (the Sony XB500 is a prime example). Interestingly, it is advertised by Audio Technica as a monitoring headphone (it even has this printed on the side of the ear cups), but this could not be farther from the truth.

The Pro700 MK2 was made for people to revel in the bass. The mids and treble are siginificantly recessed as to put extreme emphasis on the bass. This can be expected of an orthodox bass-head headphone, but the Pro700MK2 pushes this to the extreme.

My biggest warning to potential buyers is that these are very niche headphones; they are at their best with instrumental beat-oriented music such as techno and electronica but don’t sound great with most other genres. Rock and hip-hop are definitely listenable (and very fun), but the midrange/treble often leaves something to be desired especially when it comes to vocals.

That said, the Pro700MK2 is a must-try headphone for those who consider themselves bass lovers. Your current perception of bass-head headphone will likely be shattered after listening to these. Headphones like the Beats by Dre Studios, AiAiAi TMA-01, and Audio Technica M50 can’t even hold a candle to the bass of the Pro700MK2.

Worth mentioning are the significant improvements over the original Pro700. The midrange is refined, housing reverb is reduced, top and bottom extension are improved, and the bass has more depth. Proud owners of the original certainly have the justification to make the upgrade.
