Astro A50 wireless gaming headset now available

Astro’s new gaming headset has arrived! If you placed a pre-order, you should be receiving your unit shortly.

Introduced at this year’s E3, the A50 aims for the crown of gaming headsets.

Here are some of the key specs:

  • Dolby Headphone 7.1 Surround Sound
  • Kleernet Wireless Technology (best on the market, used in Sennheiser’s RS line) – Compatible with the new HP Beats laptops and other KleerNet enabled devices
  • Astro Mixamp TX (built into the right earcup)
  • 12 hours of battery life (5 hours to fully charge)
  • Compatible with Xbox 360, PS3, and PC
  • Built-in microphone with auto-mute when swiveled up into lock position
  • Bonus accessory! Headphone stand (pictured below)

Is anyone convinced this will be the best gaming headset on the market? At least in terms of usability and gamer-friendly sound, it seems to be the total package! I have not read any audiophile reviews but assuming they have further tuned the drivers from the A40, I do not doubt it.

I had the ax50s. They were pretty comfortable, but I did not find them that good let alone worth $300. After charging them they would continue to shut off and sometimes I wouldn’t even be able to turn them on. Maybe it was a defective headset. Anyways, for ps3 I use the play station pulse headset. For xbox360 I use triton headsets. Astros are just over priced headsets period.

Also, the battery life on the headsets are pretty low if you use them for the ps3. On the Xbox, the ax50 were not as good as the triton warlords.

Bottom line, I think if these headsets were half the cost it would be worth it, but I wouldn’t recommend them to anybody. You can purchase headsets at equal or greater value for a substantially lower cost.
